ParaNormal?

When I was a kid, the word “paranormal” signified the unseen visiting the seen, a mysterious confluence of worlds. We groped through what had been written concerning it, since I personally knew no one who claimed to have access. There was always the possibility that it might lead to unraveling the mystery of life. Exploring it might even unravel the mystery of mortality. At best, it represented hope against hope in unimaginable proportions, at worst, a few thrills or even a sham.

As I have grown, and learned to have faith in the information that I was always receiving from the numinous realms, it strikes me differently. “Paranormal” implies that incidents occurring within the worlds that intersect and supersede this one are not really normal. They may have a place in the grand scheme, yet are adjacent to what is normal. They are "Para", or alternate to normal.

And yet, when I consider what is normal, or, what is real, I cannot justify the term. The words Normal and Real both contain assumptions, such as REAL-ity TV. Whose reality?

For me, the realms of spirit are very real. They may represent a new frontier, one that remains largely unexplored. I think of the Star Trek mission, to boldly go where few humans are going. Living in a body, and enjoying the choices of what to eat, what to wear, when to make love, what time to get up for work, putting in time at work so that the pension kicks in and one is able to pay for vacations and life insurance, and well, you get the idea, are fine, but they are not everything. I’ve always heard and known, felt and seen things that showed me there is more.

Now that I’ve touched those different worlds, which transcend the practical concerns of time and space, and confirmed what I have sensed, again and again, it is clear that these unseen forces can play a huge role in our earthly lives. And, it’s all perfectly, well, normal! In fact, these worlds, which are actually states of being, are interconnected. Truth and love bind them together.

Call it the Holy Spirit, call it existential awareness, call it Higher Power, call it Universal Mind, call it Grace, Agape Love, the Quantum such'n'such, The Grid, Great Spirit, there are as many ways to express the greater reality, to differing degrees of accuracy and inclusiveness, as there are people and religions. It is above all a connection to the part of ourselves (and everyone and everything else) that we cannot see, but which we can sense nevertheless. And here's what makes it important: It is in sensing it, and exploring it, that we become whole.

Not that we should leave our bodies, living lives oblivious to earthly concerns. This is about integrating spirit with humanness, letting it open up new vistas for our lives.

When did it become decided that only that which we can touch and see is real? I don’t see electricity running through the wires of my house, but no one would question whether it is real. When I work with their chakras and other unseen energy fields of a person, it effects very real and noticeable healing in their physical self. When I’m working with someone’s past lives or their deceased loves ones and pets, it’s effects are as real as the house they now live in and the people who are still here. And as normal. Some things probably just have to be experienced to be believed in today's world. Most ancient cultures openly embraced all the dimensions of existence as part of this one.

The material world-view we now experience began in the Renaissance, with the rediscovery of ancient Grecian principles of methodical thinking, hypotheses and experimentation resulting in concrete “proof” that could be replicated. It was considered only one method of arriving at truth. By the end of the 1800s, however, this scientific method became accepted as the only means for discovering and proving reality. The increasingly potent powers of technology and science caused us to believe that only that which could be proven tangibly was real. It was an important correction to times of darkness and superstition that preceded it. It still makes an important adjunct to other methods of discovery. How appropriate, though, that science and technology now contribute the very information that reveal its inherent limitations.

Here is how it is doing so. Pretend you were to clip a hang nail from your finger and look at it through a super microscope, the one used by quantum physicists. Unlike older, less powerful scopes, the super ones being used today will show you that your hangnail is comprised of 99% space with a smattering of particles scattered across vast distances. You will have to really search for any particles of “matter” at all but when you do find one, let’s pretend you decide to zoom in on it. An even greater surprise awaits you. It too will not be solid. It will in fact appear more like little whirlwinds of air. Some particles, called tachyons, may even appear and reappear as you watch. These have been proven to be traveling forwards and backwards in time, as well as in and out of this dimensional reality to others and back.

Perhaps you would sit back and contemplate the implications, your surprise turning to shock as it hits you: we are not solid. (Scientists question whether we are here at all! I know some people who would agree that they are not really here.) Science comes closer and closer to verifying what the ancients and our higher wisdom teaches: that reality is formed from moment to moment by the expressions of greater realities which undergird it. This temporal reality is the joint, instantaneous expression of all of our greater selves’ intentions, beliefs, and emotions. Although such stuff would be hard to photograph on TV, that would be my kind of reality show. Then again, life is the greatest reality show, isn’t it? One where each of us gets to play a leading role in our own movie. Though not always in a way our smaller self can comprehend. But that creates another topic.

So what’s normal? It would appear that this little planet and all its interactions are what’s para-normal. The true normal is that which drives it. It’s easy enough to understand how we got this backwards. That’s why we have mirrors, and still lakes. They remind us that what seems real may actually be a reflection.

Allowing the pendulum to swing back into balance, the realm of time and space is still real. I’m not proposing duality thinking here. What happens here has long and deep consequences. We are more like the humble carrot. With a few whispy greens above ground, we gather light, air and water, while the majority is underground, gaining nutrition from the earth which also feeds the greens above. The bulk of the carrot does not minimize the beauty and importance of its greens. They feed and nourish one another. As humans, we have free will, so we can let our greens, our physical manifestation, be nourished by and feed our greater self, the meat of the carrot, or we can forget who we are. Sure gives new meaning to the concept of getting grounded, doesn’t it?

Light, air and water - think about what these elements mean. Light, awareness, insight, beauty, knowledge; Air, playfulness, fun, higher truth; Water, that which flows, a cooling calm, nourishment, music. So many aspects of a centered state of being.

Remember what Obie Wan Knobe advised Luke Skywalker as he taught him to handle a laser sword. Pulling down the blast shield so Luke could not see, he urged, “Let go your conscious self and act on instinct….Your eyes can deceive you, don’t trust them. Stretch out with your feelings.” And upon Luke’s successfully doing so, he said, “Good. You’ve stepped out into a larger world.”

The material mindset was aptly represented in this scene by Han Solo, “Hoaky religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster. …There’s no mystical energy field controls my destiny.” Hans incidentally was a warmonger, which is only one of two recourses for those of material mindset: Being a warmonger, or a pacifist at terrible personal sacrifice. Thank heavens there are more satisfying alternatives.

So explore the higher realms as part of your whole self. Let The Force guide you, for it is with you.

Another great saying by Obie Wan:

There are alternatives to fighting.
